Author Joe Tennis to sign new ghost take book
 Friday Sept. 3 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Bristol author Joe Tennis is signing copies of his new book featuring Saltville at the Museum of the Middle Appalachians, 123 Palmer Ave., on Friday, Sept. 3, 4-7 p.m., as part of the town's Labor Day Celebration.
"Haunts of Virginia's Blue Ridge Highlands" (The History Press, $14.99) features stories of the Madam Russell Memorial United Methodist Church, including the experiences of Saltville residents Bob Maule and Fred DeBusk, as well as history related to Madam Elizabeth Henry Campbell Russell.

Other chapters recall the phantom giggles heard at the Wolf Creek Indian Village in Bastian; the mysteries of Mountain Lake; demons screaming in the wall of a home in St. Paul; a spinning spoon in Independence; a Civil War soldier recently seen at Cumberland Gap; an allegedly haunted bridge on the North Fork of the Holston River at Mendota; and how a coffin may be cursed at the University of Virginia's College at Wise.
"These are all true stories," Tennis said. "And most are stories that have never been told before."

"Haunts" marks Tennis's first new book in two years. His other books include "Beach to Bluegrass," "Southwest Virginia Crossroads," "Sullivan County Tennessee: Images of America" and "The Marble and Other Ghost Tales of Tennessee and Virginia."

The Saltville Centennial Cookbook,
A Century of Good Cooking, 1896-1996

The Saltville Centennial Cookbook, A Century of Good Cooking, 1896-1996, has been reprinted by the Friends of the Museum of the Middle Appalachian and is available again at the museum store.

The cookbook contains over 110 recipes, photos and articles from and about the cooks in the Saltville area.  Nearly every recipe includes a short "memory" about its cook -- both the recipes and the stories are interesting to read.  This cookbook is a "must have" for collectors of old time recipes and heritage recipes.

If you are interested in obtaining a copy, while supplies last, contact the Museum Store.
