1782

The first saltworks in the Saltville Valley was established by Arthur Campbell. Click here to read more about it.

The Buena Vista Plaster Company was founded and started mining gypsum. Click here to learn more about it.

Each year the Saltville Foundation sponsors
paleontological and archeological research in the Saltville area.

Picture Library

Visit the Picture Library at the Museum to see and make copies of early pictures of Saltville and Southwest Virginia.

The main hall of the Museum of the Middle Appalachians features an interactive model of the Saltville Valley. Various points of historical and geological significance are represented on the model.

Surrounding the Saltville Valley Model are five permanent exhibits.

Geology
The Saltville Valley has a unique geological history.

Ice Age
See Fossils from the late Pleistocene Epoch.

Woodland Indians
View an extensive collection of Woodland Indian artifacts.

Civil War
See artifacts from two battles which occurred in the Saltville Valley.

Company Town
From 1892-1972, Saltville was a company town - for Mathieson Alkali Works in the beginning and later for Olin Chemical Co.
